Description
Petitioners
Roger de Horsley
Name(s)
de Horsley, Roger
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Roger de Horsley states that the late king granted him a pension of 40 marks for his good service, to be received from Bamburgh castle until he was given land to the same value, and that the king in his first parliament ordered this to be paid. However, although he has often sued to Robert de Hornclif, Constable of Bamburgh castle, for this money, he has been told that no money can be levied, because of the Scottish war. He requests payment of this pension, and also of the arrears.
Nature of endorsement
He is to show his charter in Chancery, and the king is to be informed of the length of time for which the aforesaid 40 marks are in arrears, and when he has been informed of this, the Constable is to be ordered to pay the same Roger the arrears, and to pay the aforesaid 40 marks in future, and he is further to sue the process against the aforesaid constable.

People mentioned
Edward [II], King of England
Robert de Hornclif (Horncliffe), Constable of Bamburgh castle
Note
Dated by Northumberland Petitions no.149, pp.173-4 to 1327-1332, the period when Robert de Hornclif was Constable of Bamburgh castle (CFR 1327-37 p.5 is dated at Westminster, 8 February 1327 and CFR 1327-37 p.296 is dated at Westminster, 28 January 1332). The petition is dated on the guard to c. 1327 with reference to CCR 1327-30 p.11, which is dated at Westminster, 16 February 1327, but from the references in the petition to the parliament of the first year of the king's reign, it cannot be that early. There was persistent trouble with the payment of this pension, as can be seen from CCR 1330-3 pp.3 (26 January 1330), 36 (18 May 1330), 73 (14 November 1330), 233 (12 May 1331), & 356 (1 November 1331): it may well be that this petition should be dated to around January 1330, and that it was what gave rise to this regular series of orders.
