SC 8/52/2592
Date
[? 1315-? 1316]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Holmcoltran (Holmcultram)
Addressees
King
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Holmcoltran, who have been ruined in the Scottish wars, and have recently been so badly damaged again that they cannot live together to serve God without great help, ask the king to grant them the advowson of the church of Brough, of which he is patron, and that they might be able to appropriate it in amendment of their estate.
Nature of endorsement
The lord king has understood that Robert de Clifford made a claim on that advowson during his lifetime, and that the heir of the same Robert is under age and in the king's wardship; because of which nothing can be done on this before the majority of the same heir.
Places mentioned
Holmcoltran (Abbey Town), [Cumberland]
Scotland
Burgh desoutz Estaynesmore (Brough), Westmorland
People mentioned
Robert de Clifford
Note
Dated on the guard to '?1315-16', with reference to VCH Cumberland II. The order to deliver the castle and manor of Brough under Stainmore to Robert de Clifford's widow, which is dated 27 September 1314 (CCR 1313-8 p.117), would seem to support a date of around this period.
