Description
Petitioners
John de Hastynges (Hastings), Lord of Burgeveny
Name(s)
de Hastynges (Hastings), John
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
John de Hastynges states that the lords of the manor of Gringley always used to pay his ancestors £4 rent annually for a field and wood called Kings Wong which belongs to his soke of Oswaldbeck; but that Constance de Bierne, who held the manor in dower, allowed the land to lie fallow, so that there could be no distraint and John could make no purchase by statute, because the reversion was to the king. After her death the land has continued to lie fallow, and the king has withheld the rent and receives no profit from it. John asks the king to pay him the rent together with the arrears, or to give him the land, according to the law in use in this case. And better to inform the king of his right, he wants it to be averred by the most respected people of Nottinghamshire.
Nature of endorsement
Justices are to be appointed in Chancery to inquire into the contents of the petition and the value of the land etc.; and to inform the king in Chancery, so that the king, thus informed, may further do what is rightly to be done.
