Description
Petitioners
Alice Arundel, daughter of Adam Arundel and Walter de Hemelsay (Helmsley)
Name(s)
Arundel; de Hemelsay (Helmsley), Alice; Walter
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Alice, daughter of Adam Arundel and Walter de Hemelsay state that they petitioned the parliament held at Westminster on the morrow of St Catherine in the third year of the king's reign, saying that Adam Arundel, Alice's father and Walter's grandfather, whose heirs they are, leased certain tenements in Atlow Cowton to the Master of the Temple in England for the term of thirty-one years, which term expired two years ago, as the indenture for the lease shows, and the lands have come into the hand of the king's father through the dissolution of the Order of the Temple, and that this petition was answered that when the indenture had been examined in Chancery, certain people were to be appointed to inquire into the matter. By virtue of this, Robert de Coigners, Thomas de Scheffeld and Thomas de Mauneby held an inquisition at Leeming on the eve of the Ascension following, which found that it was so. And the commission and inquest are returned in Chancery, but the Chancellor did nothing. They therefore petitioned the next parliament, and their petition was answered with an order to the Treasurer, Barons and Chamberlains of the Exchequer to inquire into whether Adam or the petitioners had released or quitclaimed their right in the lands to Edward II, Edward III. They returned that they could find no evidence to bar the heirs from their right, as can be seen from the certifications, but the Chancellor has still refused to do anything. They request justice.
Nature of endorsement
The inquisitions and certification are to come before the council. This petition, together with the inquisition and the certification, and all other things touching the business which are in Chancery, are to be sent before the justices appointed to hold the king's pleas; and they are to be ordered that, when they have examined the said petition and inquisition and certification and other things, and heard the party's complaint, and called the king's serjeants, and heard the arguments on one side and the other, they are to do justice.
