Description
Petitioners

Name(s)
Arundel; de Hemelsay (Helmsley), Alice; Walter
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Alice, daughter of Adam Arundel and Walter de Hemelsay state that they petitioned the last parliament at Westminster saying that Adam Arundel, Alice's father and Walter's grandfather, whose heirs they are, leased certain tenements in Atlow Cowton to the Master and brothers of the Temple for the term of thirty-one years, which term expired two years ago, as the indenture for the lease shows, and the lands have come into the hand of the king's father through the dissolution of the Order of the Temple, and that this petition was answered that when the indenture had been examined in Chancery, certain people were to be appointed to inquire into whether the lease was made in this way and into the other matters contained in the petition. By virtue of this, Robert de Coigners, Thomas de Shefeld and Thomas de Mauneby were appointed to inquire into this, and held an inquisition at Leeming on the eve of the Ascension in the fifth year of the king's reign which found that it was so. And the commission and inquest are returned in Chancery, but the Chancellor has done nothing. They ask that justice might be done to them, and that the king might remove his hand, and to order his will on this to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Chamberlains of the Exchequer are to be ordered that, when they have searched the remembrances of the Exchequer and the muniments of the Templars, they are to inform the king in Chancery of what they have found for the king's right in this matter; and then justice is further to be done.
