Reference
SC 8/52/2562
Date
[1330]
Description
Petitioners
Walter de Hemelsay (Helmsley) and Alice Arundel, daughter of Adam Arundel of Argam
Name(s)
de Hemelsay (Helmsley); Arundel, Walter; Alice
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Walter de Hemelsay and Alice Arundel state that Adam Arundel, Alice's father and Walter's grandfather, whose heirs they are, leased certain tenements in Atlow Cowton to the Master and brothers of the Temple for the term of thirty-one years, which term expired a year ago, as the indenture for the lease shows, and the lands have come into the king's hand through the dissolution of the Order of the Temple. They ask that justice be done and that they might have their lands.
Nature of endorsement
They are to show the indenture in Chancery; and if the land is in the king's hand, certain people are to be appointed to inquire into the matters contained in the petition and into other necessary articles: and the inquisition is to be returned in Chancery.
Places mentioned
Erghum (Argam)[Eryholme], [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Atteloucouton (Atlow Cowton), [North Riding of Yorkshire]
People mentioned
Adam Arundel of Argam
the Master and brothers of the Order of the Temple (Templars)
Note
SC 8/52/2563, ordering an inquisition to be held on this matter is dated 8 February 5 Edward III (1331), and the inquisition itself, SC 8/52/2564, is dated 8 May in the same year. It is clear from SC 8/52/2565 that this petition was presented to a parliament held at Westminster, which would appear to be that of November 1330.This petition is said in SC 8/52/2569 to have been presented at the parliament on the morrow of St Catherine in the third year of the king's reign: but there was no parliament held in November 1329, although that of 1330 was held on the morrow of St Catherine (26 November). From this, and from the other evidence above it is clear that the petitioners or scribe must have got the year wrong.
