Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/52/2561
Date
[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
Reginald son of Herbert (Fitz Herbert)
Name(s)
Herbert (Fitz Herbert), Reginald
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Reginald son of Herbert states that the lands of Ralph Wace who held certain lands in Stanford in the Vale from which Reginald receives a rent, have come into the king's hands because of his forfeiture; and asks that [Robert de] Hungreford, keeper of the forfeited lands, might be ordered to pay this rent with the arrears.
Nature of endorsement
The keeper is to be ordered that if he can establish that the tenements contained in the petition are held of Reginald as the petition supposes, and that the same Reginald and his ancestors were seised of the rent until the forfeiture etc., then he is to pay him the rent in future and the arrears from the time etc.
Places mentioned
Stanford (Stanford in the Vale), Berkshire
People mentioned
Ralph Wace
[Robert de] Hungreford (Hungerford)
Note
Dated on the guard to c. 1326, with reference to CPR 1324-7 p.308, a grant for life to Henry de Dytton of some other lands forfeited by Ralph Wace, dated 15 August 1326, but the Latin endorsement would suggest that the petition is likely to be earlier than this. The manor of Stanford, Berkshire, is mentioned as having lately been in the king's hands in CPR 1321-4 pp.165 and 168 (both dated 28 May 1322), so it was probably forfeited in 1322. CCR 1318-23 p.630 is dated 26 February 1323, and as it mentions two thirds of a fee in Stanford, held by Reginald son of Herbert, it would seem that they are in his hands then.CFR 1319-27 p.424 is dated 7 December 1326: the manor as a whole is still in the King's hand at this point, but whether the former keeper was Robert de Hungreford or not is not specified.
