Reference

Date
[c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
Reginald son of Herbert (Fitz Herbert)
Name(s)
Herbert (Fitz Herbert), Reginald
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Reginald son of Herbert, who is in the king's wardship, states that Joan de Vyvon gave half of the manor of Wolfeton in Dorset to Reginald le fitz Reynald and John le fitz Reynald, and to the heirs of John's body. John died without heirs of his body, and the half-manor passed to Reginald, who has now died, and whose heir is Reginald le fitz Herbert. But Reginald le fitz Reynald has alienated the lands, contrary to the form of the gift, and to the disinheritance of Reginald le fitz Herbert. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The escheator is to be ordered to inquire into the matters contained in this petition, and when the inquisition has been returned in Chancery justice is to be done, both for the king and for the heir who is under age and in his wardship.
Places mentioned
Wolfeton, Dorset
People mentioned
Joan de Vyvon (Vivonne, Vivonia)
Reginald le fitz Reynald (Fitz Reginald)
John le fitz Reynald (Fitz Reginald)
Note
Dated on the guard to c.1331-2, with reference to CFR 1327-37 pp. 119 & 293-4 &.CFR 1327-37 p.119 (commitment to Edmund Hakelut of the wardship of Reginald le fitz Reynald's lands during the minority of his heir) is dated at Windsor, 4 February 1329.CFR 1327-37 pp.293-4 (an order to the Escheator to take the manor of Wolfeton into the king's hand, and to summon John Chaunterel and Alice his wife, who have detained the manor since Reginald le fitz Reynald's death, before the king to show why they should not answer for the issues) is dated at Westminster, 22 January 1332, and would seem to be an answer to this petition: it mentions an inquisition having been held, as the endorsement asks. A date of c.1331 would thus seem reasonable for the petition.CFR 1327-37 p. 314 (an order to the Escheator to deliver the manor of Wolfeton to John Chaunterel and Alice his wife, formerly the wife of Reginald le fitz Reynald, who has proved her right to it) is dated at Woodstock, 20 May 1332.
