Description
Petitioners
Richard de la Pole of Hartington
Name(s)
Pole, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Hartington, Derbyshire
Nature of request
Richard de la Pole states that he holds a water mill at Fairfield, in the forest of High Peak, of the king at fee farm, for the repair of which its previous tenants have always had timber in the forest. The mill is now very run-down and ruinous, but although Richard has often asked the Master of the forest for timber, he has refused to do so without a new warrant. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
.He is to show in Chancery how he came to have this mill, and if he shows a charter or other thing by which he has reasonably come to have it, then certain people are to be appointed to inquire into whether the tenants of the said mill used to have such timber, and from what time, and by what title, and if the said Richard has been seised of this, and from what time he has been prevented from having it, and into the other circumstances; and when the inquisition has been returned in Chancery, justice is to be done there.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? early Edward III', which seems plausible from the hand and the French endorsement. No positive context has been established, and the petition is therefore dated notionally to the second quarter of the fourteenth century.
