Reference
SC 8/52/2554
Date
[c. 1322-c. 1330]
Description
Petitioners
Roger de Heyton
Name(s)
de Heyton, Roger
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Everwik (York).
Nature of request
Roger de Heyton states that he has been imprisoned in York castle without reason, and asks that he might be released, and stand at common law to answer to any complaint.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege. The king is to be informed in Chancery of the cause etc., and justice is further to be done for him.
Note
Dated on the guard to the reign of Edward II, and possibly to c. 1322, on the grounds that the petitioner might be the Master Roger de Heyton, king's surgeon, who is granted custody of a town in Merioneth on 1 March 1328 (CPR 1327-30 p.244), and who is sent to the Abbot of St Albans to receive maintenance on 23 June 1329 (CCR 1327-30 p. 555) - but, as the note points out, there is no evidence that this is the same man. He might equally well be the Roger de Hayton juxta Lodelowe who is pardoned for the death of Stephen de la Mare and any consequent outlawry on 8 January 1323 (CPR 1321-4 p.234). From the hand and the French endorsement, the petition certainly seems likely to date from late Edward II, or possibly early Edward III (if the petitioner is not the king's surgeon).
