Description

Herbert le fitz Johan (Fitz John)
Name(s)
fitz Johan (Fitz John), Herbert
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Herbert le fitz Johan states that he was seised in his demesne as of fee of the manor of Crookham, which afterwards came into the hand of John de Knokyn, and that the subsequent dispute between them concerning this manor was resolved by Herbert granting it to John for life, saving his right and that of his heirs. After John's death he entered the manor, but was expelled by Humphrey de Waledene, who took it into the king's hand, where it now is. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Because the right of the complainant is not made clear by this petition, it does not seem to the council that an injury has been done to him by Humphrey's action.
Places mentioned
Crookham, [Berkshire]
People mentioned

Humphrey de Waledene
Note
In CFR 1319-27 p.29 the order to the Escheator to re-take the manor into the king's hand is dated at Westminster, 10 July 1320, and the commitment of it to Humphrey de Waledene is dated at Westminster, 13 July 1320. This is the situation described in the petition, which must date from after this date. The manor might have been surrendered to be given to the petitioner.
