Reference
SC 8/51/2533
Date
[1306-1307]
Description
Petitioners
Isabel de Hakeburn, daughter and heir of Richard de Hakeburn
Name(s)
de Hakeburn, Isabel
Addressees
King
Nature of request
Isabel, daughter and heir of Richard de Hakeburn, states that she brought a writ against Thomas Corbet before the justices of King's Bench concerning some tenements in Beddington, but because Thomas produced the king's charter of feoffment, the justices refused to proceed. She petitioned the king at Lanercost before All Saints for a letter to the justices to proceed, notwithstanding the charter, but was answered that such a letter had been given to Edmund Gasselyn, who was also claiming against Thomas Corbet, and that if this was not sufficient for her too, she was to ask for the king's grace again. She now says that the justices refuse to proceed by this letter, which makes no mention of her, and asks the king to command the justices to proceed in this business, notwithstanding the charter.
Nature of endorsement
She is to have a writ to the justices that they are to proceed, notwithstanding the charter.
Places mentioned
Bedenton (Beddington), [Surrey]
Lanercost, [Cumberland]
People mentioned
Richard de Hakeburn, father of petitioner
Thomas Corbet
John de Roges
Edmund Gasselyn
Note
Dated on the guard to 'c.1306', with reference to the king being at Lanercost before All Saints (CCW p. 256) and CPR 1301-7 p.32 and CCW 1244-1326 p.163. 1306-1307 would seem more exact: according to Michael Prestwich (Edward I, pp.507 and 556) Edward was at Lanercost priory between October 1306 and March 1307: the All Saints referred to is presumably that of 1306.CPR 1301-7 p.32 is dated at Devizes, 27 April 1302, and CCW 1244-1326 p.163, which would seem to be a preliminary to this grant, is dated at Foulmere, 6 April 1302.
