[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas de Hellebek
Name(s)
de Hellebek, Thomas
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Thomas de Hellebek states that he enfeoffed the late Robert de Clifford and his heirs with his manor of Brough Sowerby forever, in exchange for a certain sustenance for him and certain servants, and that Robert bound his manor of Winton to do this; and that he was seised of this sustenance throughout Robert's lifetime, during the minority of his son Roger and throughout Roger's tenure, until the lands came into the king's hand through Roger's forfeiture. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Certain faithful people are to be appointed to inquire into the contents of the petition, and, when his deed has been examined and the inquisition returned in Chancery, justice is to be done to him there.
Places mentioned
Sawreby (Brough Sowerby), [Westmorland]
Burgh de south Staynmore (Brough), [Westmorland]
Winton, [Westmorland]
People mentioned
Robert de Clifford
Roger de Clifford, son and heir of Robert de Clifford
the Earl of Warwick
Henry de Percy
Bartholomew de Badelesmer (Badlesmere)
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1322', with reference to the forfeiture of Roger de Clifford (CPR 1321-4 p.81, dated at Tutbury, 11 March 1322 gives the order for his arrest) - and this would certainly seem plausible.
