Nature of request
The people of Highgate and Islington state that the king granted by his letters patent, for the upkeep of the high road between Highgate and London, that a certain sum be levied from all those passing along the road with merchandise to sell, to last for three years; the three years are now up, and the road is once again falling into disrepair and travellers are abandoning it. They ask that the patent might be renewed in the present parliament, without a fine being paid, for seven years.

Note
Dated on the guard to '? 1380', with reference to three years having passed since the original grant (CPR 1374-7 p.476, dated at Westminster, 3 June 1377). CPR 1377-81 p.548, dated at Westminster, 30 September 1380, may well be a response to this petition.
