Date

Description
Petitioners
Joan de Hedersete, widow of Richard de Hedersete
Name(s)
de Hedersete, Joan
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Joan, widow of Richard de Hedersete, states that her husband owed a fine of 1000 marks to the king and 100 marks to the late queen's gold for a trespass he committed, and that although he paid the money due to the king, the money due to the queen is still being demanded from her: but that as their lands in Norfolk were purchased jointly this sum should not be demanded from her. She asks that she might be discharged for term of her life, and states that Richard's son Walter and Stephen de Graveshende hold lands in Middlesex that used to belong to Richard from which the debt can be levied.
Nature of endorsement
She is to have a writ of Chancery to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer that, when they have seen her charter of joint feoffment, if they find it to be so, then the lands which Joan holds in this way are to be acquitted, and the other lands which belonged to the said Richard are to be charged.
Places mentioned
Norfolk
Harwe (Harrow), [Middlesex]
Haringgeye (Hornsey), [Middlesex]
People mentioned
Richard de Hedersete
[Eleanor of Castile], Queen of England
Walter [de Hedersete], son of Richard de Hedersete
Stephen de Graveshende (Gravesend)
Note
Dated on the guard to 1290-1299, because of the reference to the late queen, to whom this money was owed: the assumption is that the petition was presented before the king's second marriage, to Margaret of France in 1299. However, this does not seem certain, and many of the petitions in this section of Rot. Parl. vol. I come from later in the reign of Edward I.CPR 1281-92 p.150 is dated at Bristol, 1 January 1285, and CCR 1296-1302 p.158 is dated at St Albans, 26 April 1298.
