Description
Petitioners
William de Hedersete, formerly receiver of the custom on wools in the city of London
Name(s)
de Hedersete, William
Addressees
King
Occupation
receiver of the custom on wools in the city of London
Nature of request
William de Hedersete, formerly one of the receivers of the custom on wools in the city of London, states that through the fault of his late colleague, William de Rude, he owes great arrears to the king, both for himself and for William; and as a result of this he has been arrested and is in the Fleet prison, and his lands have been seized into the king's and delivered at farm, and waste and destruction has been made of them, so that the king receives no profit. He requests a letter to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to set terms for his debt to be paid by instalments, and to release him from prison and return his lands to him, paying annually for them what the others have done, who have had them by commission of the Exchequer, on condition that if he misses a payment he is to be arrested again and his lands seized into the king's hand.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered that if he finds adequate mainpernors to answer to the king for as much as the others, who hold them by commission of the Exchequer, give now for the same lands, until the debt to the king is fully paid, then they are to have him released and deliver his lands to him on such mainprise; on condition that if the said William or his mainpernors default on the payment prescribed for any term, then William is to be arrested again, and his land taken back into the king's hand.
