Description
Petitioners
Richard del Haye
Name(s)
Haye, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Noef Chastiel sur Tyne (Newcastle upon Tyne), [Northumberland].
Nature of request
Richard del Haye states that he holds a messuage in Newcastle upon Tyne, paying an annual rent to the king; but that in the time of the king's grandfather the Sheriff and Wardens of the castle of the town came, in time of war and before the walls of the town were constructed, and destroyed the buildings there, saying that it was harmful to the castle: and its site still lies vacant, to Richard's great harm, and losing the king his rent. He requests that he might be pardoned the arrears of this rent, as he is prepared to pay it in future.
Nature of endorsement
[Certain people are to be appointed] to inquire whether the buildings of which the petition makes mention were knocked down by the king's ministers for the reason mentioned in the petition or for another reason, and how much the said messuage was worth when the buildings were knocked down, and how much the site is worth now, and how much the messuage used to pay to the king, and into all other articles concerning this business, and to return the inquisition in Chancery. And when the inquisition has been returned, justice is further to be done.
Note
The commission to hold the inquisition in CIM 1307-49 no.1570 is dated 12 April, 11 Edward III (1337), and the inquisition was held on the Friday after the Nativity of St John the Baptist (June 1337). This would seem to be the inquisition ordered by the endorsement to this petition. The writ to hold the later inquisition, CIM 1307-49 no.1868, is dated 26 June 15 Edward III (1341), and the inquisition was held on the Thursday after the octave of the Purification (February 1342).
