John de Haulton states that his father, John de Haulton, formerly Sheriff of Yorkshire, paid Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, then under age and in the king's wardship, £39 10s. for his sustenance, at the command of Henry III and of Edward I, for which he had writs of Edward I, and a letter of receipt from the Earl - but he was given no allowance for this money in his account, because Edward I and Henry de Lacy were not in England. This money is now being demanded from the petitioner, and he requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
When the rolls of Chancery for the fifty-fourth year of King Henry's reign, and before and after if necessary, have been examined, and if the writ for the command which the lord king gave to John de Haulton, then Sheriff of Yorkshire, to deliver £39 10s to Henry de Lacy is found there, then a writ of Chancery is to be sent to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer that they are to allow the aforesaid money to John, the heir of the said John the Sheriff, if the said Sheriff or the same John has not previously had an allowance for this.

Dated on the guard to 'Temp. Ed. I' and possibly to 1274-87, with reference to CFR 1272-1307 pp.239 (dated at Hereford, 25 July 1287) & 241 (dated at Westminster, 10 October 1287). If this is the same John de Haulton, the petition cannot be later than 1287.The petitioner's father was Sheriff between 29 March 1269 and 28 May 1270 (or between 29 March and 5 April 1269?)
