Description
Petitioners
William Hatheway, king's baker
Name(s)
Hatheway, William
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
king's baker
Nature of request
William Hatheway, formerly baker to the king's father, states that the late king owed him £19 9s. 6d. halfpenny, and that both the late king and the present king have often ordered that this be paid to him, but it has never been done. He requests that this debt might be paid.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer, Barons and Chamberlains of the Exchequer [are to be ordered] that, when they have seen the writ which was previously sent to them on this business, they are further to make execution according to the tenor of the same writ.
Places mentioned
Dover, [Kent]
Windsor, [Berkshire]
Oxford, [Oxfordshire]
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
Note
CPR 1307-13::p.304 is dated at Berwick upon Tweed, 19 January 1311 and CCR 1307-13 p.297 is dated at Berwick upon Tweed, 1 February 1311. These together with the French endorsement, make it clear that the petitioner was Edward II's baker, and that the petition therefore belongs to the early years of Edward III rather than to '? c.1313 seq.', as a note on the guard says. It is clearly not from the very start of the reign, as the petitioner says that the present king, as well as the previous one, has ordered that he be paid (several times), but is likely to be from the first few years of the reign.
