Nature of request
John de Hastings states that Aymer de Valence, Earl of Pembroke, held the manor of Compton in Dorset of the king in chief, and that he enfeoffed him with this manor, for himself and the heirs of his body, to hold of Aymer and his heirs, without asking permission of the king; and John then re-enfeoffed Aymer for term of his life, again without any mention of permission. Now, after Aymer's death, the Escheator has taken the manor into the king's hand for this reason. John asks the king to order that the manor be delivered to him for a moderate fine, and that he might be pardoned his misdeed.

Note
Dated on the guard to 1323-5, with reference to the death of Aymer de Valence in 1323, and that of the petitioner in 1325. According to the Handbook of British Chronology, Aymer de Valence in fact died on 23 June 1324. CPR 1324-7 p.95 suggests that John de Hastings was dead by 12 February 1325, when custody of his lands was granted to Hugh le Despenser the younger, and CCR 1323-7 pp.432-4 (an assignment of dower dated 3 December 1325) suggests that he held at least the advowson of the church of Compton Valence at this time.
