Nature of request
John de Hastyngs states that when Rhys ap Mereduth, who held Newcastle Emlyn of his father, John de Hastyngs, rose up in war with the whole country, his father, with others of the king's men, took the castle and entered it as his escheat, by Rhys' forfeiture, and was seised until Robert Typetot, Justiciar of West Wales, demanded the castle from him in the name of the king, saying that his right would be saved. But although John's father requested the castle as his escheat, according to the law and usage of Wales, he was always delayed, and John the son has also often petitioned parliament on this, and never had a response. He requests the king's grace concerning the castle and its appurtenances, as his escheat according to the law and usage in Wales.
