SC 8/51/2505
Date
[c. 1307-c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Dean and chapter of the free chapel of Hastings castle
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The Dean and chapter of the free chapel of Hastings castle state that their predecessors, by their charters and the confirmation of the king's father, always had a tithe of the fish in the port of Winchelsea, but that this tithe has been alienated from them and has come into the hands of the people of Winchelsea. They request a remedy, so that they might be able to recover their estate in such a way as might be to the honour of God, Holy Church and the king.
Nature of endorsement
Because the king's Bailiffs of Winchelsea are charged with the requested tithe and render account for it at the Exchequer, the petition is therefore to be sent to the Exchequer, and the Treasurer and Barons ordered by writ of Chancery that, when they have heard the arguments of the aforesaid Bailiffs on this, they are further to do what seems to them is to be done, or to inform the king and his council of what they have found, if there is any underlying difficulty etc. why this cannot be done without consulting the king.
Places mentioned
Hastings, [Sussex]
Winchelsea, [Sussex]
People mentioned
[Edward I], King of England
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1315', with reference to CCR 1313-8 pp.172-3 and CPR 1317-21 p.57. CCR 1313-8 pp.172-3 however is quite irrelevant, as it concerns the collection of a tenth from the clergy, while CPR 1317-21 p.57 seems to refer to CPR 1321-4 p.57, a commission to visit the free chapel of Hastings, and to inquire into various abuses and defects in the lives of the canons there, and again does not seem relevant. However, from the hand and the Latin endorsement, the petition does appear to come from the reign of Edward II.
