Description
Petitioners
Prior and convent of Holy Trinity, Hastings
Addressees
King
Nature of request
The Prior and convent of Holy Trinity, Hastings state that they have been ruined by flooding from the sea, so that their income from three churches in Hastings is greatly reduced, and they have also lost other rents, and ask that they might be able to approve £40 of land or rent annually for their sustenance.
Nature of endorsement
Concerning the acquisition of tenements: they are to come into Chancery and have a writ there to inquire if it is to the [king's] harm.
Places mentioned
Hastings, [Sussex]
Note
The commission for CIM 1307-49 no.1709 is dated at the Tower of London, 18 May 14 Edward III (1340), and CCR 1339-41 p.333 is dated at Kennington, 24 October 1339: but, as a note on the guard says, this petition seems much earlier, both from the hand and the Latin endorsement, and no mention is made of the burning by pirates mentioned in CCR 1339-41 p.333. It is almost certainly from the reign of Edward II.
