Description
Petitioners
Matthew Hannemere, clerk, Prebendary in the cathedral church of St David
Name(s)
Hannemere, Matthew
Addressees
King
Occupation
Prebendary in the cathedral church of St David
Nature of request
Hannemere requests ratification of the prebend notwithstanding any collation made to Bruges or any other before this time or the plea pending in the king's court, considering that the keeper of the privy seal has the letters of ratification with the clause non obstante so that the petitioner has no fine or answer, or otherwise that the matter can be discussed and attermined before certain prelates assigned by the king or chancellor, calling the royal justices to them, and that they do not suffer Hannemere to be deprived of his prebend by inquisition of lay people who have no knowledge of the law, since Bruges has great lordship and office and is well known and the country much inclined to his will in the country where the writ is carried which is some distance from the prebend, and the petitioner is a stranger there. Hannemere was provided to the prebend by Pope Urban. However Potter took an ordinary collation from the bishop of the place by which he had possession, but was subsequently ousted in favour of the petitioner who continued in peaceable possession until the bishop died and Bruges by virtue of the resignation of Potter falsely suggested to the king that the prebend was vacant and obtained a collation and now pursues the petitioner by a writ of quare impedit in the Common Bench to his great damage.

Note
The petition appears to date to c. 1389 as the petitioner received ratifications of his estate in the prebend on 19 August 1389 and 26 July 1390, one of which might represent a response to this petition (CPR 1388-92, pp.101, 295).
