Hugh de Hanford

de Hanford, Hugh
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Hanford requests that no letters of great men be granted to Horewood in disturbance of his right and the law, and that of grace it be granted to him a more hasty recovery for his poverty and misfortune. Okelond and Horewode with 100 armed men came to his house of in Stratfield, ousting him and taking his goods and chattels, by which Horewode, who was then of the Household of the king and Despenser, the son, brought letters of Despenser hindering his recovery. He has subsequently enfeoffed Berenger who is protected by the earl of Winchester.
Nature of endorsement
At the common law.
Places mentioned
Stratfield Turgis, [Hampshire]
People mentioned
Richard de Okelond
William de Horewode
Hugh le Despenser, the son
[Hugh le Despenser], Earl of Winchester

Note
Although one might only expect that someone would complain of the Despensers after their fall, there is no hint in this petition that they are dead, and indeed the petition suggests that they are alive as it makes mention of no further letters of great men being granted. The petition is likely to date to the period of Despenser ascendancy between 1322-6.
