Reference
SC 8/50/2481
Date
[1327-1330]
Description
Petitioners
Edmund Hakelut (Hackelute).
Name(s)
Hakelut (Hackelute), Edmund
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Hakelut requests that he be restored to the rent that he received from the vills of Elton and Leinthall in the lordship of Wigmore which were given to him by Mortimer, and which are now in the king's hand.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be delivered to Bury, and he will show it to the king to give his will.
Places mentioned
Elton, [Herefordshire]
Leinthall, [Herefordshire]
Lordship of Wigmore.
People mentioned
Roger de Mortimer.
Note
Rees (Petitions Relating to Wales, p. 69) suggests that this petition dates to 1327 or more likely to 1330, as the land referred to was forfeited by Mortimer and Hackelute's rebellion in 1322, and the petition either followed on the accession of Edward III, or the execution of Mortimer. Rees favoured the latter, but the matter is unclear. The petition certainly dates to 1327 or after as it refers to Hackelute holding the land in the time of the late king. Reference on guard to AP 1941, which also bears an endorsement referring to Richard de Bury, seemingly before he became Bishop of Durham, and hence to the period 1327-33.
