SC 8/50/2457
Date
[c. 1333]
Description
Petitioners
Philip de Gopillariis, Prior of Goldcliff.
Name(s)
de Gopillariis, Philip
Addressees
King and council
Occupation
Prior of Goldcliff
Nature of request
The prior requests that all leases made for life by Martel after he had ejected the prior from his priory as well as recoveries by assizes made by virtue of the same and all other charges made on the priory be annulled, and that he may have a writ of re-seisin of the temporalities to be delivered to him, so that the monks that are reinstated are able to have their sustenance, and others who have left may return to do service to God, and so that the king is not ousted from his advantage in time of voidance. Martel had ejected the prior from the priory by force and arms, and was able to establish his claim to the priory by false bulls which were verified by Inge. The king, believing Inge, granted the temporalities to Martel, and the prior was forced to petition parliament for recovery which he obtained writs for. In the meantime Inge wrongfully by assizes successfully impleaded the prior concerning manors of the priory that he claimed to hold for life by lease of Martel, and damages were awarded against the prior. The prior despite making suit in Chancery was prevented by Inge from obtaining a supersedeas
Nature of endorsement
He should have a writ in Chancery formed in his case containing the effect of this petition returnable before the king to John to answer it as a party, and there let the record and process be made to come, and let justice be done according to the law of the land. And it seems to the council, if it pleases the Chancellor that the prior should have a stay of the damages by surety until a certain day.
Places mentioned
Goldcliff, [Monmouthshire, Wales]
Tintern, [Monmouthshire, Wales].
People mentioned

Note
The petition is likely to date to 1333 or shortly thereafter for the writ for the restoration of the temporalities which is referred to in the petition was issued on 6 February 1333 (CPR 1330-4, p.406).
