Description
Petitioners
Thomas le Goldsmyth (Goldsmith), Merchant of Bodmin; William Store, Merchant of Bodmin
Name(s)
Goldsmyth (Goldsmith); Store, Thomas; William
Addressees
King
Occupation
Merchant of Bodmin
Nature of request
The petitioners request that it be granted to them that they may be able to pay the debt that they owe to the king separately for tin coinage in the time that Petyt was sheriff of Cornwall in instalments of 10 marks each. They and others were robbed on the high seas by galleys of the king of France, and if they cannot pay by instalments the king will not be served and they will be ruined.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council, if it pleases the Chancellor, that they should have regard to this that the merchants are impoverished by the robbery that they are not able to pay the debt without ruining their estate, that they ought to be able to pay the debt in instalments each of them of 20 marks per annum to be paid until the debt is fully satisfied by sufficient surety.
Places mentioned
Bodmin, Cornwall
Cornwall
Gascony, [France]
People mentioned
John Petyt (Petit), late Sheriff of Cornwall
Note
The petition seems to date to c. 1336 as John le Petit, is referred to as 'late the sheriff of Cornwall', and his term ended in November 1336 (List of Sheriffs, p.21). It is interesting that Goldsmith represented Bodmin at the parliament at Westminster in February 1338, and if this is a parliamentary petition, this would have been an ideal time to have presented this petition (CCR 1337-9, p.388).
