Description
Petitioners
Thomas Godard of Spalding
Name(s)
Godard, Thomas
Addressees
King
Nature of request
Godard requests that he be granted the farm of the bailiwick of Holland which amounts to 45 marks per annum for his life, receiving the farm from the sheriff of Lincoln, as the king granted him the bailiwick of Elloe wapentake in Holland for the term of his life, but this has been granted to Stowe for his life.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.
Places mentioned
Spalding, [Lincolnshire]
Elloe wapentake, [Lincolnshire]
Holland, [Lincolnshire]
People mentioned
Robert de Stowe, valet of the bishop of Chichester
Note
The petition probably dates to 1339 as Godard was granted the bailiwick of Holland during good behaviour on 3 November 1339 (CFR 1337-47, p.151). It would seem that the king did not wish to grant the bailiwick for life. There is no evidence of an earlier grant to Godard of the bailiwick of Elloe, but a Simon de Whitton was granted that bailiwick on 17 July 1339 (CFR 1337-47, pp.136-7).
