SC 8/49/2420
Date
[c. 1328]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of St Peter of Gloucester
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The petitioners request grace and remedy, and that they be restored to their estate in the church of St Peter which the king granted them, and which they held peaceably until the monks there were killed by the Welsh in the time of war, and the church was taken into the hand of the king's grandfather.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be ordered into Chancery, and there they are to show what they have of the advowson of the gift of the king, and of what time the advowson has been in the hand of the king, and how and by what cause. And the chancellor is to call all those that are to be called to do right and reason.
Places mentioned
Gloucester, [Gloucestershire]
Note
The petition probably dates to 1328 or thereafter. The guard comments place it probably after a voidance in 1328, and it might be safer to date it after the fall of Mortimer as the clear reference to the burial of Edward II at Gloucester might seem strange during the term of Mortimer's regime.
