Nature of request
The petitioner shows that he holds the vill of Stainburn and a moiety of the vill of East Rigton in Wharfedale (adjoining Knaresborough Forest) from the fee of Robert del Isle in pure and perpetual alms. These lands (held of the forest) were seized by King John and afterwards removed from forest status, but the steward of Knaresborough claims they have now returned to the forest and the petitioner cannot take any income because of fines for trespass levied by the bailiffs of Knaresborough. The petitioner asks the king for a remedy.2) Copy of the original charter of King John dated 27 March 1204.
Nature of endorsement
John de Doncastre and Richard de Bernyngham are appointed to enquire into the right of the matter in the presence of the king's representative, the constable of Knaresborough Castle. The results of the enquiry to be returned into chancery that thereafter a final decision can be made.
