Occupation
Abbot of Fountains
Nature of request
The Abbot of Fountains states that William de Nessefeld, the Escheator, is claiming that he has found through an inquest that certain lands, which the Abbot claims to have held since the foundation of his church, are held of John de Lisle, who holds of the king in chief by knight service, who released the services due for them to the abbot's predecessor: so that the Abbot now holds of the king. William has taken the lands into the king's hand, because the Abbot entered without process of court, and without performing the services due to the king. The Abbot states that John never released the services to any predecessor of his, and has charged himself with the issues of these tenements in his account at the Exchequer, and paid them; and he requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The lands with the issues are to be restored to the Abbot because they were wrongly seized, as no trespass is found in the purchase of the said tenements, saving the services to the king, if they are due to him; and the Abbot is to be instructed to appear before the Chancellor on a certain day to show why he ought not to perform these services.
