[c. 1322]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Furness
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Furness state that the king's ancestors by their deeds gave the Abbot and convent the right to take wood and other necessities in the forest of Lancaster, according to the tenor of the transcript attached to this bill, and that they were seised of this right until the Earl of Lancaster made a park in the said forest, enclosing all the best woods of the forest within this park, and refusing to let them enter, wrongly and contrary to the deeds of the king's ancestors. They request that when this has been inquired into, they might have grace and a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
[None, because on dorse of SC 8/47/2337]
Places mentioned
Fourneys (Furness), [Lancashire]
Forest of Lancaster, [Lancashire]
People mentioned
[Thomas of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster
Note
Dated on the guard to c.1338, with reference to CPR 1338-40 p.15, which is dated at Westminster, 15 February 1338. However the Latin endorsement and the presence of the clerk's name 'Herlaston' (William de Herlaston) would seem to indicate a date in the reign of Edward II. The complaint against the Earl of Lancaster, and the fact that he is spoken of in the past tense ('ne voloit soffrer qil entrassent de denz cel park') suggest that this petition dates from after his fall in 1322.Chetham Society 78, pp.691-692 dates this petition to c.1279, which is much too early for the hand and the spelling.
