Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Furness
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
The Abbot and convent of Furness state that the late William de Coucy held in chief of them on the day he died half the manor of Ulverston, which should be their escheat, as he was born overseas, and has no heir born within the king's allegiance. However, the inquest has mentioned his brother, Ingram de Coucy, as next heir, although he was born in France, as the Abbot is ready to aver. He has often petitioned the council about this, and these petitions have been sent to the Chancellor to do justice, but he has done nothing. They request justice.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be sent before the king, if it please him, and there, when the king's serjeants have been called, and the arguments for the king and for the party on the said business have been heard, they are further to do what the law requires.
