Nature of request

The Abbot and convent of Furness state that their land is surrounded by water, which cannot be crossed without great danger, and that there have been many drownings, like that of Michael de Haryngton, because of which the office of coroner there has not been duly executed, and that for this reason they petitioned the king's father, in the parliament in his nineteenth year, to grant them their own coroner in all their lands and fees in Furness, and return of all writs concerning these lands and fees, and the tenants living there. The king's father ordered an inquisition ad quod damnum, a transcript of which is sewn to this petition. The Abbot and convent ask the king and council to examine this transcript and to grant them the coroner and return of writs.

Nature of endorsement

The inquisition, and the evidence and charters which he has, are to be examined in Chancery, and there what seems to them should be done for the king's benefit is further to be done.
