Occupation
chaplain, formerly brother of the order of St Mary de Areno, London
Nature of request
Robert de Forensete, chaplain, formerly brother of the order of St Mary de Areno, London states that he and Simon de Tunstude were appointed Keepers of the house of their order in Norwich, with the assent of the whole chapter, a certain brother Walter de Croxton, who calls himself the Provincial Prior of the order in England, came often to that house and carried off its goods and ornaments to the value of £40, and when they refused to stand this any more he declared them fugitives and excommunicated. When they appealed to the head of their order, and received letters from him in their support, and also papal letters concerning other injuries inflicted upon them by the provincial, he came to a house where they were with other brothers of the order and with a great number of laymen, and carried them off to Cambridge, where he beat and wounded them and imprisoned them for forty days, where Simon died of hunger without confession. And Robert's friends could obtain no release for him through writs of the king, as the provincial had bribed the Sheriff. He requests a remedy, as the provincial has enough money to make satisfaction for the injury and the trespass against the king, and asks that he be swiftly arrested, as he is planning a bolt-hole abroad.
