Reference
SC 8/47/2323
Date
[c. 1335-c. 1340]
Description
Petitioners
John de Farendon, clerk
Name(s)
de Farendon, John
Addressees
King and council.
Places mentioned
Brampton, [Huntingdonshire].
Nature of request
John de Farendon, clerk, states that he holds certain lands and tenements in the vill of Brampton in Huntingdonshire of the king in chief, paying 6 s. annually at the Exchequer by the hands of the Sheriff for all services, and does not hold according to the custom of manor of Brmapton, which is of the king's ancient demesne. Nevertheless he is being taxed among the tenants of the manor, and not with the county. He has sent a writ of Chancery to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer asking them to discharge him, if they can find from their remembrances that these lands have been taxed with the county and not with the manor; but they say that they find that the lands have been taxed in both these ways at different times, and will do nothing. He states that as he holds his land at common law he should be taxed with the community, and requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered that if they can find by the rolls and remembrances of the Exchequer that the said John currently holds the said land at common law, as a free fee, or if the said John can show before them that he holds it in this manner, then the said John is to be taxed with the community of the county, and not with the people of the said manor, notwithstanding that he has previously been taxed or tallaged with those of the aforesaid manor.
Note
CCR 1333-7 pp.476-477 is dated at Nottingham, 28 March 1335, and the petition must date from after this gift. John de Farendon still held the lands in 1340, as is shown by CPR 1338-40 p.471, dated at Westminster, 22 April 1340.
