[c. 1342]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas atte Felde (Field) of Winchester
Name(s)
Felde (Field), Thomas
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Thomas atte Felde of Winchester states that he is the tenant of part of the lands and tenements which formerly belonged to Thomas le Palmere, merchant of Winchester, and that a command has recently been given to the Sheriff of Hampshire to seize all Thomas's lands and tenements because of a debt which Thomas le Palmere owed the king for trespasses concerning unpaid customs on wool, for which Thomas le Palmere made fine with the king, paying it to John de Flete by indenture, as his charter of pardon shows. But although they have a writ of the king to cease from this demand, the Barons of the Exchequer refuse to do so, as the indentures have not been produced, and John de Flete did not account. Thomas atte Felde asks that the Barons of the Exchequer might be ordered to allow the charter, in order to discharge him, notwithstanding this indenture.
Nature of endorsement
Because the king's letter patent of pardon, of which this petition makes mention, shown before the council in parliament, attests that the fine for which that pardon was granted was paid to the aforementioned John de Flete for the king's benefit, as this petition supposes, a writ is to be issued to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to allow the same letter patent according to its force, notwithstanding that Thomas atte Felde, who makes complaint, cannot show the indenture for the receipt of the same fine, charging for this those who are to be charged. And the king's hand is to be removed from the tenements, if there is no other reason to retain them.
