Date
[1322-1325]
Description
Petitioners
William de Faudon.
Name(s)
de Faudon, William
Addressees
King
Nature of request
William de Faudon states that the king, for his good service, especially in the taking of Gilbert de Middelton and his brother John, granted him 10 marks' worth of rent to be received in the Exchequer for term of life, until the king had provided him with land to that value, as appears from his charter, a transcript of which is sewn to this petition. He asks that he might be granted the manor of Felling, in the Bishopric of Durham, which is in the king's hand through the forfeiture of Ralph de Eplingden, who died at Boroughbridge, paying the king annually the value of the manor over and above 10 marks, as his 10 marks is in arrears, and the Treasurer is refusing to pay him.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.It seems to the council, if it pleases the king, that it would be good for the king's lands which lie fallow in various places to be delivered, by a good high assessment, to people who have rents to receive in the Exchequer, in order to discharge the Exchequer.
Places mentioned
Felling, County Durham
Pountburgh (Boroughbridge), [West Riding of Yorkshire]
People mentioned
Gilbert de Middelton (Middleton)
John [de Middelton (Middleton)]
Ralph de Eplingden
[Humphrey de Bohun], Earl of Hereford
Note
This petition must date from after the battle of Boroughbridge in 1322. Northumberland Petitions, no.121a, pp.146-7 gives a date of 1322-1324, which seems reasonable. Despite the endorsement, the petitioner does not seem to have been successful: the commission for CIM 1307-49 no.880 is dated 6 December 19 Edward II (1325), and the inquisition was held on the eve of the following Trinity (May 1326), and at this point the land is still in the king's hand. It is possible, but perhaps not very likely, that this inquisition is a result of the petition, which would then be dated to 1325.CPR 1317-21 p.75 (the original gift) is dated at Westminster, 30 January 1318.
