William de Fisshacre, knight
Name(s)
de Fisshacre, William
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
William de Fisshacre states that he was heavily distrained to come to Portsmouth, to cross to Gascony, by Walter, formerly Bishop of Exeter, of whose manor of Paignton he is a tenant, and who was anxious to acquire some meadow land of his lying among the bishop's meadows, and that the Bishop, in collusion with Hugh le Despenser the son, harassed him until he made fine to the king in 20 marks; and also broke his promise, made in a letter, to aid him with his armour and horses for the expedition. He requests grace of the 20 marks.
Nature of endorsement
Nothing for this.
Places mentioned
Portsmouth, [Hampshire]
Gascony, [France]
Paignton, [Devon]
People mentioned
Walter [Stapledon], Bishop of Exeter
Hugh le Despenser the son
Note
This petition is dated on the guard to 'c. 1327 seq.' on the grounds of the complaint against Walter de Stapledon, Bishop of Exeter, who died on 15 October 1326, and Hugh le Despenser the son; and this seems to be quite a reasonable assumption.
