Description
Petitioners
William de Foderingay (Fotheringhay)
Name(s)
de Foderingay (Fotheringhay), William
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
William de Foderingay makes two requests:1) He states that he was presented to the church of Bulphan at the presentation of the Abbess of Barking, and by judgment of the judge delegate, but that William Warin of Essex, claiming to be patron of that church, presented Thomas le Brun. The Abbess brought a writ of judicavit before the Bishop of London to cease in the plea begun before him until the right of patronage had been decided in the king's court, but he ignored the writ and instead received an appeal from the court of Rome on behalf of one Robert de Gygges, who was not even party to the case. He requests a remedy.2) He states that the Bishop, not satisfied with this, claimed in the king's court that William de Foderingay held lay power in the church of Bulphan, and obtained a writ to the Sheriff of Essex to remove the lay power. The Sheriff, although he found no lay power, nevertheless by collusion removed William and his clerks, put Robert de Gygges in his place, and carried off his goods and chattels. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
To the first petition: he is to sue by a writ of attachment, because the bishop contravened the prohibition. To the second petition: he is to sue a writ of trespass.

Note
A note on the guard states that Robert de Gygges was parson of Bulphan in 1310, with reference to CCR 1307-13 p.256 (dated at Windsor, 8 June 1310), but that Roger de Sutton was parson in 1311, with reference to CCR 1307-13 p.344 (which appears to be an erroneous reference). By the writing and spelling, however, this petition would seem to be rather earlier. On the basis of a dating of 1310, the Bishop of London is Ralph Baldock (1306-1313).
