Reference
SC 8/46/2289
Date
[c. 1350-c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Edlyngton, son and heir of Hugh de Edlyngton
Name(s)
de Edlyngton, Robert
Addressees
King's council
Nature of request
Robert, son and heir of Hugh de Edlyngton, states that a process was initiated in the Exchequer while he was under age, and had no aid or counsel, concerning wools shipped by his father to Dordrecht, and because of his non-appearance, it was adjudged by the Barons of the Exchequer that his lands were to be seized into the king's hand, assessed, and retained until he received satisfaction - without any mention being made of Robert's minority. Robert is now of age, and ready to answer to the king for the wool if he is chargeable, but he claims to have several pieces of evidence to prove that he is not. He requests a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to receive him to answer to the king on this matter, notwithstanding his default when he was a minor, in the same as he would have been able to answer before that judgment.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer on the matter contained in this petition, to receive and answer him, notwithstanding the fault of his minority not being put forward, and when the evidence mentioned by this petition has been examined, if he is found to be chargeable, he is to be charged according to the evidence, and not according to the previous judgment.
Places mentioned
Dordrecht, [Holland, Netherlands]
People mentioned
Hugh de Edlyngton
Reginald del Conduyt
John de la Pole
Note
Dated on the guard to '? after 1343', with reference to CCR 1343-6 pp.141 and 154, both dated 1343. The Dordrecht scheme to which the petition refers occurred in 1338 and the references from 1343 indicate the petitioner's father to be alive at that time. The petition is tentatively dated to c. 1350-c. 1377 on the basis that complaints about non-payment of the Dordrecht bonds continued throughout the reign of Edward III.
