Nature of request
The people of Holy Church in England state that although bishops have the power of collation to churches in the realm, and have done from time immemorial, lay people of the country are wilfully occupying these churches with force and arms, taking the offerings, and preventing the duly inducted clergy from performing their duties, for fear of their lives. They request a remedy, so that these occupiers are completely removed, and they are able to enter and hold their benefices in peace.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have a writ of vi laica amovenda, and other writs at common law.
owever, this petition does not necessarily connect to this, although the hand would seem to suggest this period.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? c. 1391' with reference to Rot. Parl. vol. III, p.290a-b (wrongly cited as vol. IV, p.290). This suggests that the problem of forcible entry into churches was part of a wider lawlessness at this time. However, this petition does not necessarily connect to this, although the hand would seem to suggest this period.
