The great men of the realm of England, speaking for themselves and for the whole community, state that although they and their ancestors have always been able to have access to the documents of the Exchequer concerning their affairs, whether in the form of copied remembrances or in access to the rolls and other documents for their attorneys, this access has been denied by the Bishop of Rochester, lately Treasurer of England, who has made all the clerks of the Exchequer swear never to copy any remembrance for anyone, or to allow anyone to know anything about any debt they owe the king, nor to let any attorney see any documents. They request a writ under the great seal or privy seal to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to allow the great men, their attorneys and other suitors for them and for the community to be able to inspect the rolls of the Exchequer and other remembrances, as they used to do, and to discharge the clerks of their oath.
