Nature of request
The clergy of the province of York state that they had recently granted the king a biennial tenth on certain conditions contained in a document delivered to the Archbishop of York and to Thomas Wake, and which the Archbishop has sent to the king in a letter. They ask the king to grant and affirm these conditions by his letters under his great seal.

Dated on the guard to '? c. 1340' with reference to CCR 1339-41 pp.505, 591. CCR 1339-41 p.505 is dated at Berkhamsted, 15 August 1340, and CCR 1339-41 p. 591 is dated at the Tower, 15 December 1340: both provide evidence for a biennial tenth granted by the clergy in the province of York at this time. This petition would seem to date from shortly after the grant.
