Description
Petitioners
Brother Thomas de Eyton
Name(s)
de Eyton, Thomas
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Brother Thomas de Eyton states that Thomas, Earl of Lancaster has obtained permission from the Abbot of Selby for brother Thomas to live in his household: which he did until he was made sub-prior of Tutbury, where he remained during the lifetime of the Earl; and then, at the king's request, the Abbot and convent of Marmoutier appointed him as Prior of Holy Trinity, York. However, as he was travelling to York to take up this post, the Abbot of Selby's men seized him, took his horses, gear and treasure, and are still holding him in prison. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the council that the king has nothing to do with the discipline of the Abbot and his fellow-monk.
Places mentioned
Selby, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Tutbury, [Staffordshire]
Mermonster (Marmoutier), [Touraine, France]
York
People mentioned
Thomas [of Lancaster], Earl of Lancaster
the Abbot of Selby
the Abbot and convent of Marmoutier
Note
Dated on the guard to '? 1323-7, with reference to the death of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. There is no reference to the appointment of Thomas de Eyton as prior of Holy Trinity, York: but there is a gap for the years 1324-7 and 1331-5, and on internal evidence the petition seems more likely to date to the second of these periods.
