Nature of request
The Mayor and community of Exeter make three requests:1) The justices of gaol delivery in Devon refuse to deliver Exeter gaol without a specific instruction to do so in their commission, and the Chancery clerks refuse to issue such an instruction without consulting parliament.2) The justices of assize and gaol delivery often absent themselves for various reasons, so that the gaols could not be delivered even with an appropriate commission; they ask that for a commission of gaol delivery to be granted to John de Chuddelegh, the Sheriff of Devon, Henry de Hugheton, the Mayor of Exeter, and Matthew de Crauthorne, or to others as it pleases the king and council.3) Although the Mayor and community ought to choose two coroners and always have, the Chancery clerks will not grant a writ to the Mayor and Bailiffs to do this, but only to the Sheriff of Devon to choose coroners in the full county court, in prejudice to their franchise. They request a remedy.
