Nature of request
William de Melton, Archbishop of York, states that he purchased the manor of Bentworth with the king's permission from the Archbishop of Rouen, was fully seised of it and had taken the attornments of some of the tenants, when he was expelled with force and arms by Richard de Wynteworth, who has no right in the manor. He brought an assize of novel disseisin against him, which should have been heard on Monday 11 March last, for which the king had issued letters under the privy seal [targe] to John Juge, justice, to hold the assize despite the fact that parliament was sitting, but Richard procured letters from the king under his secret seal, commanding John to be at parliament at Westminster, thus delaying the assize and several others. The Archbishop requests that there might be no more such delays, but that the king might order the justices to proceed to take the assizes on the appointed day.
