Reference
SC 8/46/2272
Date
[? 1338]
Description
emph altrender="doctype">AP William [Melton], Archbishop of York. King's council. Beverley, [East Riding of Yorkshire].
Nature of request
William, Archbishop of York, states that although all pleas arising from things done within his franchise of Beverley, should be and have been determined there and not anywhere else, and inquisitions on these held by people of the said town, the king has now brought an oyer and terminer concerning a trespass committed in Beverley, and the justices have hitherto sat outside the franchise and held inquisitions with outsiders, in prejudice to his franchise. He requests a writ to the justices to hold their sessions in Beverley in future, and their inquisitions with people resident there.
[On face] For the Archbishop of York. And it is to be done as before.
Note
CCR 1337-9: p.619 is dated at Kennington, 22 November 1338, and, as is made clear there, follows the exemplification of the tenors of various pleas dated at Kennington, 20 November 1338 (CPR 1338-40 pp.165-7 and 169-70). It would seem likely that this is the case referred to here.
