Description
Petitioners

Addressees
King and council
Occupation
Abbot of St Mary's, York
Nature of request
The Abbot of St Mary's, York, states that he and his predecessors have had a tithe of venison in the forests of Yorkshire by gift of Henry II, and that John de Crombwell, then Keeper of the Forest north of the Trent, at the procurement of the ministers of the forest of Galtres, petitioned the parliament held at York in the second year of the king's reign that the venison from this forest might be replaced by the venison from the forest of Spaunton. An inquisition ad quod damnum was held, and the king, informed of the results of this at the discussions held at York in the same year, granted this exchange to Abbot Alan, the predecessor of the current Abbot, for five years. However, there is much less venison in the forest of Spaunton than in the forest of Galtres, so he asks that he might either have the tithe from the forest of Galtres again, or the tithe from the forest of Spaunton in perpetuity and permission to purchase £20 worth of land outside his fee in compensation for his past and future losses.
Nature of endorsement
He is to have the venison of the said Forest of Spaunton for the term of another five years.

Note
CPR 1330-4 p.177 is dated at Westminster, 9 October 1331, and the petition it mentions is clearly this one - although Forest of Pickering pp.258-259 seems to think that it is later, as it mentions a statute against mortmain of 1344. C 143/198/24 is dated to 2 Edward III (25 January 1328 - 24 January 1329) - which agrees with what the petition says.
